Questions about Old Age Deaths

My Sim was at the gym when I got the notification saying that her live-in father is beginning his last few days. I've read that this triggers a few days before, when the elder sim in question's life/age bar is full and shimmering.

I summoned her home immediately to check on this. I saw that he was 91 days old, and that the bar wasn't even close to being full yet. Maybe 3/4 of the way. It isn't my first elder to die, obviously, and each time I got the notification, without a doubt, their age bar is always glowing indicating that their passing is imminent. Usually within 24 hours. Would her father still end up dying after the allotted time upon receiving the notification (up to 5 days I think)?

Is it true that an elder's age depends on and is relevant to whether or not they have been fulfilling their wants?

  • I know the bodybuilder aspiration gives a longer life. I've been playing on long lately so I haven't had any sims die of old age for a little while.
  • indeed the bodybuilder aspiration as well as certain other things increase the days of an elder's life. Their wants have no relevance though. Once the bar is full it's basically just a roll of the dice each day until they die.

Oh, I thought wants played a big role. Thank you for informing me :) I just thought it was strange that I got the notification because his bar wasn't full, can an elder still die of old age with that being the case? Or will it only occur naturally once it's totally full? He doesn't have the bodybuilder aspiration.
  • It has always been this way in my games:

Warnings come up that so-and-so is coming to the end of their long lives.

Then afterwards, their bars are full and glowing kind-of. Then any time after that they can die - either one day after or a few days after if they have bonus days.

They've never died of old age before that bar is full and glowing.
  • Now that I think about it, I got a warning like that too, before the bar was full. As it turned out, his wife died first, then I got a second warning about putting his affairs in order before he died three days before the actual death. I think there was at least a week between that first warning and his death.
  • I've found the Fitness skill has a huge impact on how long it actually takes them to die after this message. If they're one of the Sims who you see around town jogging while you play other people, chances are they're going to live a looooooong time.
  • My elder sim has been quite active until I left him on free mode and he decided to hop on the treadmill despite almost dying from exhaustion a couple of times. I barred him from any exercise for a couple of days, and around that time was when the game said it's almost his time to go. I can't win. Go figure. LOL

Thank you kemisz :) you eased my mind. Glad he still has time.
  • That’s the first notification. The second one comes exactly 24 hours before the death and when the age bar is glowing.
