I started out quite uninterested in TS4. I had seen the information EA had released and after wading through a lot of the confusion (EA, your PR sucked then and it still sucks now) I just didn't see any reason for me to buy the base game at that time because I know how EA like to stage their trailers, how EA tend to run their business models (i.e. nickel and dime EVERYTHING) and on top of that I just wasn't in the mood to deal with another lifecycle of The Sims after how disappointed I had been with TS3.
Launch day came and went and then I started checking out a few YouTube LPs because some of the people I had subbed to were doing them and I think that was when I actually started to get interested in the game. The graphics were nice, the game was running smooth, the sims themselves looked really good and in spite of what I knew was missing the game looked like a lot of fun so I went ahead and bought it. I'd say I probably enjoyed it for what it was for a good few months and I was even looking forward to the first expansion pack (I will note I did not have a lot of the bugs other people had around that time, probably due to my play style) but at that time EA were being very quiet and I was hesitant to jump in any further because the game was just flat out not doing very well and EA dropped Sim City like a stone without any prior warning. Basically I didn't want to spend my money on a game months away from getting the axe.
These days, I've gone back to being quite apathetic towards it. I've always said TS4 set up a nice foundation for future content and for what the game was at the time it was still enjoyable, but after a few pleasant months EA are right back to doing things I'm not particularly happy about from a business standpoint and they seem to be ignoring features of the game that I consider to be important so I've still yet to buy anything other than the base game.
If EA changes this in the future then I'll probably buy up all of the expansion packs to catch myself back up again, but at the moment I just can't justify it. They got a good £100+ out of me for a game I never enjoyed (in fairness, this was my fault), I'm really not eager to repeat that again.
Edit: In a way I find it kind of funny that because of how I feel towards EA, my knowledge of how they like to manage DLC, my knowledge of how they like to fake trailers to make a game look much better than it is and my past experiences with them in general I am so distrusting of them to actually make a decent game that I just don't tend to give their content as much of a chance. A part of me realizes that's irrational but they've just burned me too many times - I have absolutely no reason to be loyal to them or to put any kind of faith in them because they've spent a good 5+ years destroying any trust or faith I had.
