I think I may understand a little bit, but you are right not completely. On the one hand you wouldn't mind they put this over in some different category such as in genetics? Yes, it shouldn't take up a trait slot, I agree about that. But you are also offended they put it in the game at all because you see traits (your perspective) as quirks and therefore this trait is reduced to some quirk in your opinion?
There I have to disagree with you. Traits are not quirks irl. We develop quirks over a lifetime of living usually by our experiences. A quirk is if I get up everyday and do something religiously the same way for whatever reason..that's a quirk that most wouldn't have..see the difference? A trait is something deeply engrained into a person either by inheritance of that trait (not genetics) or learned behavior. A quirk is something we do without realizing we do it religiously. As to say repeatedly at particular times or for particular reasons etc. Those aren't traits and are consider quirks that mainstream do not do. Like developing a tick for whatever reason it may be would be considered a quirk. Traits are never quirks.
So, Maxis has not reduced this genetic problem to a quirk but elevated to a trait. But I would argue they are wrong and should have added to a genetic category. People can develop asthma that is true but many are born with this genetic defect. Which that, too should go in some genetic category yet to be developed. Traits are different, I agree with you there and no the lactose intolerance shouldn't be a trait. And I understand you want it removed from the slot choices and perhaps put in a new category, such as genetics but you are also offended perhaps by not understanding quirks are not genetic problems, nor are they traits they are things that develop over time from our experiences and perhaps our anxieties or from our need to have things always the same. Such as Sheldon having to have his seat on the couch all the time and no one else sit there, ever..is a quirk. A baseball player touching his bat to his shoes before batting is a quirk...a bit superstitious, but it still a quirk and not a trait. Because they wouldn't be superstitious about anything else so not a trait. Lactose intolerance can develop for many reasons and can be born with it (genetics) and or due to other problems developing in the body. It's not a quirk and Maxis did elevate it to Trait but they should have put in it genetics. Point, they didn't make a mockery because they elevated this genetic problem to a trait the highest of personality.
