@EternalSunshine, if you are willing to use mods, there are fixes for both the gardening and rocket issues:

Two different fixes for the gardening issue (only need one of them):
Personally, I just plan on using testingcheats to spawn the fruit when my scientist gets to work. It's an extra step, but it saves me needing to worry about one more mod to update.
