Should I buy IL if I hate supernatural stuff?

Yes I'm the same way, and don't have vampires. But you have to actually play a mermaid to even see them otherwise they are just like normal Sims and they'll swim normal and you won't be able to even tell there a mermaid. Even if you ask them they'll say no. I've been playing the pack for a long time and no sign of any mermaids anywhere even if I know which Sims could be a mermaid if I added them to my household. But yeah even if you have a super high relationship with a mermaid you won't have any indication they are a mermaid unless you actually add them into your house and play them as a mermaid or create a mermaid yourself.

Like one of my Sims has the mermaid from the trailer as his girlfriend and full pink and green bar but we still never seen her transform into a mermaid and when we ask her if she's a mermaid she says no. When she swim she just looks like a normal Sim and swims the way that humans do because we haven't added her to our household and don't intend to. I only know she is one because of the trailer of the pack.

I hate supernatural stuff, but I didn't mind the mermaids. They are more low-key than vampires, in my opinion. I wouldn't say it interferes with realism much because they aren't always in there mermaid forms, unless they are swimming, so you won't really see mermaids all that often.

Overall, I would say they are pretty avoidable and I would still purchase the pack.

Kinda like aliens be prepared for blue and red sims running around though.

There is a soft lock, existing mermaids will behave like normal sims at all time, unless you unlock them by any of those means:
-you have a playable mermaid, either create one in CAS or have your sim eat kelp
-you get high enough friendship with a townie mermaid and ask them the truth about their nature
-you blow a conch around one and ask what is up with them
-you make a townie mermaid playable by adding them to your family even without knowing the truth

If you want to know who the mermaids are to avoid them altogether, have the suspected sims nearby and check if you can snorkel with them, if they're not available for the activity, they're half fish.

Probably not a good idea to pay 40 bucks for sunbathing and swimming in not even all the worlds but only one?

You won't see any mermaids if you don't have

What I like about that if you're not too entirely into mermaids as they're not invasive. I know I blew the conch just to check and see who was a mermaid, but they still denied being a mermaid I suppose if you don't have much of a friendship with them.

So, it's like they're not even there in the least. I kinda like them really not terribly into supernatural things myself, but I like them. :)

@QueenofMyshuno Just like it was mentioned above, plus even if they're in the water they won't turn into a mermaid less any of the above is instigated.

As long as you're not making any mermaids, or adding townie mermaids to your game, you should be fine. However, it may be best for you to wait for a sale.

There's actually another interaction that shows up after blowing the conch, ask about the noise they were making or something (playing in french), this one doesn't require friendship.
