I think mainstream can be either a fine thing or a not fine thing. Like really cool and hipster can be a fine thing or a not so fine thing. It depends. For me the most important thing in this game is realism to some extent (like, I want there to be things in my houses that are clearly wood, or metal, or fabric, or plastic, I don't want everything to look like Fimo clay) and sims with unique and human appearances, but not in a photorealistic way. I do like a somewhat stylized art style for this franchise.
