In hindsight, I want to say that TS4 is the first Sims game in years now that doesn't have that switch to determine your Sims' sexuality. I distinctly remember going to clubs in TS2 and scanning the room and, according to the sex they'd been flirting with most, those Sims lighting up and sparkling going by the turn on/off feature.
(Sorry, I'm gonna geek out here.)

Going into the data for my Sims in TS3, it turns out that freshly made Sims are "undecided" in sexuality and it's actually on like...a sliding scale. If you flirt exclusively with the opposite sex, it'll lean more towards straight. Flirt exclusively with the same sex, you are homosexual. However, this isn't set in stone; if your Sim begins to flirt with the sex that's different from the one that they started with, they will actually become bi, opening up the ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD to you.
Now, I'm not entirely sure if bisexuality existed as a way to check and see who your Sim wanted to flirt with in TS2 (did they...autonomously flirt back then...?), but hey!
I just find it incredibly fascinating that TS3 was so forward thinking as to make sexuality a *sliding scale* (which is what it actually is for people, but that's getting into psych and human sexuality and I'm not a college professor), yet TS4 has taken so many steps backwards. I genuinely do hope that, eventually, a switch is added to the game. And not a literal one. I'm going to be so angry if you have to actually tick a box and be like "OKAY, WHO DO YOU WANT THE GAME TO MAKE THIS SIM LICK". I'm a generational Simmer, doing some excessive baby-making to see how genetics carry out, but I can see this being a serious problem to the thousands of Simmers who are not like me.
I'm a generational player in Sims 3 as well (not sure about 4 yet, I suspect I'll have to try a different angle in that game if I want to enjoy it) and it does affect my game as well. Because family will always leave your household at one point (or I leave a household to continue with a heir). If you've played a gay sim, or a womanizer, it's just no fun when they turn out to be all straight immediately or not into women anymore but into guys. Also in this case: it completely breaks the immersion, the sense of playing with real people. Sims shouldn't behave out of character, whether you control them or not. That's why traits are more important than emotions and that's why details as mentioned in this thread are important.
