Do you have a quote or a link to that @happysimmer3 ? Unless we can see the context it's hard to know exactly what they were referring to in terms of the game. Did they say they left out things they didn't feel were absolutely necessary or was that just your understanding / interpretation of what was said?
For example when I see the quote "complexity was their enemy" I tend to think open world. I can't be certain because I don't know where the quote came from.
SimGuruMax said this when talking about the complexity of the TS3 that it was hard and complexity is their enemy with budgets and time etc. They avoided the complexity as much as possible in the TS4. This also went on to talk about how complex carrying a baby or toddler in the TS3 is so they avoided it in the TS4. It was hard. That is in the tech discussion threads with the gurus. As he went on to further explain, you can't put a toddler in the pocket to be able to multitask so complexity is their enemy when it came to building this game to carry around a baby but then you can't put the baby in the hind pocket (basically) and the multitasking requiring they use another object or drink etc. And something about graphs and nodes on that graph. :#
Oh boo hoo. Their job is hard? The code is complex? How about hiring someone who knows how to code? My job is hard and complex, but I do it because I get paid for it. I also love it. I can't stand hearing about how hard everything is with this team. It comes up a lot. Toddlers are hard, dishwashers are hard. Terrain tools are hard. Open world is hard. Color wheels are hard. Ugh. Get real. Just do your job. If this team isn't qualified to make the best game possible, they need to be fired or transferred to a simpler game. Is it possible they bit off more than they can chew? Maybe, but it still doesn't excuse creating a deficient game and then saying, "Oh gee, we didn't understand people loved the Sims so much". This team has the benefit of a game with 15 YEARS of history, the customer base, and the fans. It's not new. They're not reinventing the wheel. They also have the benefit of fans who would LOVE to be involved in even a beta test. Did they beta test? No. You know why? Because they knew they were releasing a sub-standard game.
You know what's hard? Collapsing a franchise because someone thought creating dishwashers and color wheels was too hard. It doesn't end there. This game is lazy all across the board and it's going to come back and bite them in the bottom.
As for being too expensive, does anyone know how much revenue this game creates? It's got to be massive. The Sims 3 store was a big deal. I'd be curious to see how much Sims 4 has made to date.
The devs are gated. These are talented people that are very capable of doing what we ask, but it's their limited budgets set by the company that make things hard for them.
