Unfortunately I think the child gets deleted if the last remaining older sim in the household dies.
Your best bet is probably to look for an older save (the game keeps the 5 most recent times you saved your game) from before the child's mother died. And substitute that save file for the current one. Then open that file in the game and add the child to your household.
