Spellcaster reading spell books above their level?

I have a spellcaster who's an acolyte and I bought her the "tome of furio", an adept level spell book, in advance of her ranking up (she's more than halfway there). A little while ago I clicked on the...

Yeah. Tried a spellcaster in an old save who happened to be same rank & the same thing happens. Happened when I removed mods folder too. Did a game repair a week or so ago for another issue so am taking the drastic step of doing a game uninstall/ reinstall. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
