Spellcaster reading spell books above their level?

I have a spellcaster who's an acolyte and I bought her the "tome of furio", an adept level spell book, in advance of her ranking up (she's more than halfway there). A little while ago I clicked on the...

That's interesting because my spellcasters haven't been able to learn spells from tomes above their rank. Some of them had some tomes in their inventories for a long time because of this. I haven't tried it for maybe a couple of months though so maybe something has changed.
