Strangerville/military career

In the covert track my daily task is "search the stars" I know this means to use the telescope, but the progress is absurdly slow. A full day of telescope work seems to only raise the progress by a quarter. This makes it virtually impossible to complete the daily task before going to work. What's up with this?
