Unless you already have a sim on their way to completing the bestselling author aspiration, I'd say ambrosia is actually faster/easier to obtain than the book of life, it "only" requires you to max the gourmet cooking skill and find some rare ingredients. And yeah, as you already figured out, the book has to be bound to a sim before their death.
If you're going to use the wishing well from the Romantic Garden SP, make sure the well is in a good mood and save your game before wishing the dead person back to life, because there's always a chance it will go wrong. Alternatively, if you have Realm of Magic, witches can learn spells to summon ghosts and give them their bodies back, the former shouldn't be a problem since the ghost is already in your household.
