I know once I save them to my library if I put them in another game I am able to change the main traits .. and physical appearance too, not sure why.
I don't think we can do it from the same save game though if they are ongoing characters, and if you move them to library then back in game they start off fresh but with all the traits you've given them (they earned). I do this often with my ghost girl, I use her as a caretaker, mentor, repairman, babysitter and all around helper (no casper jokes now) in many of my different save-games.
