In the older versions behaviour has consequences, often long lasting. That is a concept missing from the game and the culture it is a product of.
The funniest think I ever witness in TS2 was a bunch of sims I had going through University.
Two of them just seemed to be constantly flirtatious, but they were involved with other sims.
So at the end of their Uni stay, I finally had them have a fling at a party.
Forgetting about that, I intended the group of them share a house until they got their careers started.
So loading up the the new house, all of them were on the sidewalk. One of the cheaters immediately turns to the other and kisses her.
The following rounds of slaps were hysterical. And none of those ridiculously playful TS4 slaps, they were furious with each other.
The fallout was so bad that I had the cheaters move out and become a couple.
