It wasn't appealing only to that demographic until sims4 came along and removed everything that appealed to everyone else. The renewed interest in sims3 and sims2 demonstrates that the playerbase isn't just made up of people content with only building, or only dressing and making up Sims as fashion dolls.
They could restore balance by bringing back what sims4 lacks: excitement, risk, danger, consequences, fast cars, motorcycles, blowing things up (sims3 ambitions).
Then it would regain its broader appeal.
