There is a night light you can place above the kids bed. I don't know the english name, but it makes the monster to never appear again. The nightlight won't help toddlers, but reading them to sleep and raising their thinking skills will help alleviate the sleeping problems.
As far as the mess making goes, I either cancel it out when I see it starting, or have the parent discipline the child. They can also do it for inappropriate "language."
It also helps to play the lullaby station on a stereo in the toddler's room. (It won't keep them awake.) It's been awhile since one of my toddlers has had a nightmare, and in that case, I couldn't read her to sleep because there was a thunderstorm. (There's a bug that makes the toddler try to 'run inside' when you read them to sleep during a thunderstorm.)
