I do the same thing! I'll have sims live in Willow Creek and use the strip there, for example, but travel to San Myshuno or Windenburg for a night out on the weekend.
I've recently started replacing all the Maxis-made lots with lots from the gallery (I don't know why it took me so long, ha), and I'm really loving how just placing a different lot can the area feel like a completely different place, even if the surroundings are the same.
Also, I love exploring the little secrets around a neighbourhood, like collectibles, fishing spots, etc. - I think it makes every world worth a visit!
