Considering the fact that modders already managed to create functional cars in TS4, the devs themselves shouldn't have a problem with it.
Sometimes I imagine what the dev's conversations at Maxis would look like :
Dev 1:"We should really add cars, it's been so long since the game released!"
Dev 2:"Nah, no hurry, modders already did this, we can now concentrate on "My Second Pet Stuff!"
Dev 3:"Yeah, I guess you're right..."
But seriously, I would die for some usable cars patched in, school buses would be neat, too, but a bit more realistic please. They shouldn't just stop at every sim's house. As much as I know about American school buses (we don't really have them in Germany, except for elementary students), there are designated bus stops for students to wait. It would be cool if this would actually happen, like a special place in neighborhoods with drivable streets (Windenburg island wouldn't really work), where teens and children would go so the school bus would pick them up (maybe even a chance to miss the bus with a tense-moodlet?).
I don't really need carpools though, I didn't even know something like this existed before I played TS3 xD They actually annoyed me, fortunately I have a mod with which I can disable them for specific sims, aswell as the school bus).
Really?? What kind of function are we talking about?? Have a Link??
modthesims.info/d/558029 @Chazzzy With "function" it's more like you can actually select "travel" when clicking on them, but these cars are not drivable, you just select to travel and get to a loading screen. They still give a moodlet though, I think it's an energized one, but I don't really know. Haven't tried this mod for ages.
ETA: Seems like the moodlets depend on which type of car you choose
