I don't build my own, but I love to place extra community lots in each world.
1. Restaurants - They're great for giving families time together in the evening on days when I don't have much to do for them. They have to eat anyway. I've found a bunch of different themed ones so there are options.
2. Spas - I love sending them off to go get manicures for special occasions.
3. Bars - These are my favorite venues for dates for my sims. Again, so many differently themed ones. I also love sending them out on New Year's Eve for the countdown to midnight; it's so much cooler when all the NPCs join in. All of my bowling alleys also get classified as bars.
4. Beaches - Sulani is one of my favorite worlds, and I live within easy driving distance of a beach, so I let my sims have day trips to the beach all the time. It's great for families.
5. Windenburg ruins and bluffs - I know it's a special lot type, but I've added a teen hangout at the bluffs and love sending all my teens there to hang out together and blow off steam. And I love the secret parties that happen throughout Windenburg; it's a neat feature.
