I don't care for Don either. He cheated on Cassandra Goth and left her at the alter. He is just used to populate the town if needed. He may not be a loyal husband or boyfriend and makes a good victim for black widows, but he does tend to be a good dad to kids for some reason. Eliza tends to be a bad mate and mother. Usually Bob and Boozy are the ones to take care of the kids and pets. Not sure what Eliza does most of the time, probably stalking other Sims, but she does not do well at home.
