That is my exact fear too! I've been telling myself for years that going forward, even with a new iteration of "The Sims" to just expect more of the same only with a shiny new look.
I'm hoping that someday another developer (maybe Rod Humble's new game?) will come along and make a life simulator game that is actually focused on the game play aspects of it, where we can actually observe the actions and thoughts of our character through their behavior rather than just a pop-up text telling us what is supposedly going on but never actually "seeing what is going on".
