I'd say the addition of toddlers followed by the Parenthood GP have been the biggest gamechangers. Both have brought a lot more depth to my family play. I just found out that simply interacting with the baby raises the Parenting skill; both my Sims were up to level 2 before their eldest aged to toddler. I enjoy my Sim parents having to deal with the vagaries of childhood phases and teen mood swings. And toddlers are adorable, as well as giving a head start on developing the childhood skills if you get the toddler skills up to level 3 or 5.
Same - I pre-ordered Sims 4 and played a total of 8 hours in its first three years. I was looking for a game to play when the Parenthood pack came out, and that's when I found out they'd finally added toddlers. 760 hours since (would be more, but I have a 60hr-week job). This is also the first time I've played more than two generations, because your parenting affects your Sims as they grow into the next age. (I do wish we could have more affect on babies - essentially, all you can do is build parenting skill and your relationship with the child. It would be nice if a baby that was fed and changed promptly, and cuddled and bounced would have a 'happy baby' moodlet as a toddler.)
In any case, I think parenting is better in Sims 4 than in any of the previous iterations - there is so much more a parent can do to help their kids to gain skills and traits that will make adulthood easier.
