I chose medium, because I really prefer one story homes, mostly because my game does this weird "flippy" thing on upper stories. Actually, a basement is good for extra room, because the basement and ground floor stay stable. I don't use money cheats, so my families always start off in small two bedroom places. As the family grows, I just add more rooms. So a 30 or 40 lot works best for me.
The other problem with mansions are puppies. Idk if it's just me, but they can't seem to go up stairs.

I love your violin idea! I'll have to try that! Although I don't have that many families with that kind of money laying around, lol
One thing I do to help new families is have my phenomenal painters take some masterpieces over to the new houses, after the family moves in, and leave them there so that the family can sell them. That gets them like $10,000 pretty often, sometimes much more, because a lot of their "paint from reference" paintings go for $3,000 plus
