Until my Sims are able to afford a better bed or upgrade the one they have, energy is the worst. It goes down way too fast and the only way to fulfill it is to sleep, nap, get a reward trait or cheat. I try my hardest not to cheat for needs if I can help it, but I do use the less extreme rewards traits from time to time. Coffee is useless, barely fills the bar and makes their bladder need tank. First time I tried using coffee in TS4 was so disappointing. I would have my TS2 Sims drink it all the time! It was funny when they drank too much and would get all jittery. :D
As for social, that one isn't really all that hard to fill, just time consuming if you play with a single Sim as I do a lot of the time. Luckily, it seems most of my Sims living alone, are inundated with visitors to their lot or walkbys. Ask them to cloud/stargaze, chat a bit and boom, social filled. Barring that, they will call friends or text when it's too late. The best thing though, in my opinion, for loner Sims is to get their gardening skill up so they can talk to their plants! ;) Erratic Sims can just talk to themselves or a teddy bear so they're good too.
Now, I've seen so many mention that Fun is hard to fill without using a TV/Computer/Video games. There are tons of other ways to fill fun and quickly too. For instance, as someone mentioned, have them use the earbuds. Just turn them on (don't choose listen) and they can do everything else (except sleep) while the earbuds fill fun in the background. Or, the best thing to use in my opinion is a bicycle. Bicycles fill the fun need ridiculously fast.
Just have them ride down the street a little ways and come back, boom, fun filled to the max! It also gives them Fitness skills. I think the bicycle from DU and EL gets a bad rap sometimes since it can be glitchy and unrealistic when they ride them indoors. But, hey, it fills fun and fitness so it's worth it in my opinion. If the unrealistic glitchy things bother you, just don't keep it in their inventory and only have them use it when fun is low.
Other fun things are; fishing, painting (at a higher level), cloud/stargaze, singing, woo hoo, gardening (at a higher level), swings, knitting, waterslide, aqua zips, canoes, playing with a campfire or bon fire, playing in the rain, playing in the waterfall in IL, making sand sculptures, snow angels and snow pals, flying in a rocket, playing chess, tell jokes, bubble baths, reading, Don't Wake the Llama, Cards, Foosball, Darts, basketball, ping pong, bowling, watching fish in an aquarium, using the bubble blower, blow bubbles, play with sparklers, playing with toddlers/pets, mixing drinks, meditating, and yoga. I'm sure there's more, just can't think of them off the top of my head. :)
