In regards to creating the ships one thing I had to "fix" was how to deal with night/day cycles since I wanted the ships to have windows and it wouldn't make sense to be sunny, raining or snowing in space or have shadows on a lot - so what I've resorted to doing is after a ship is built, I literally build a giant box around it and give it "animated stars wallpaper" (found on modsims).

building a box with starry wallpaper around the ship...That is flipping brilliant. I am really looking forward to seeing how you make all this work.
