In my estimation, low needs with bad grades is the impetus. If you can roll back a game save prior to the kid being whisked away, check to see what's going on. If the needs are low and the grades failing, then perhaps you can do a quick cheat needs and fix things in order to carry on with your scenario. Have the kid do the make-up work, too, in order to raise the grade. I appreciate that you're likely trying to tell a particular story, and you should be able to do so. Just keep the grades up and the needs, too. See if that helps.
