I actually haven't been getting as many fires recently, and I used to have them all the time, even though I would buy my sims the most expensive appliances. It's probably because now when they have a low cooking skill I pretty much only let them eat salad. The most recent fire I had wasn't even a kitchen fire, it happened when I sent my family camping and the bonfire caught one the chairs next to it on fire.
