I've been saying these things about the personality system for awhile now. It's the reason why I don't play nearly as much as I used to; what's the point when you already know what's going to happen?
And yes, sims that are always happy (regardless of given traits) drives me mad. Basically, what the devs did was to give all sims a default personality that for the majority of the time, overrides whatever traits you gave that sim.
But they won't fix it. I suspect that this would require a radical overhaul, and with TS5 in the pipeline, I doubt they'll put that sort of effort into TS4.
