Aw, that's so heartbreaking, @asimbsim. Thanks for sharing the story with such lovely pictures. I love the one where Eliot is following Benjamin across the bridge. I always respect players who accept what twists in the story come along. I myself am usually tempted to exit without saving, but that isn't as realistic.
I do give kudos to the team for allowing some chance of accidental death for children. Here again, it's the realism factor. Fire is one to which I have lost a Sim child. The fire started with the science station. I was unable to extinguish it with my other family members in time, and the child didn't run to safety for some reason. I'm always careful to place the station either outside, or with a really clear path to safety, now. I haven't had any child drownings, but I have seen one in a Let's Play. It seems to happen really quick, if they are tired, way quicker than adults. As the one in the LP was a member of the household, I could see in the vid that he was tired when he got in.
There is always the quest to bring them back to life, should you enjoy that. It can be quite involved if you go the Ambrosia route, or even the Spellcaster or Wishing Well option. In the case that I had with the fire death, the brother vowed to do this. It took until he became a Young Adult to make the Ambrosia, without cheating. He finished raising his brother, and they lived happily ever after. ;)
