Collecting is fun, as when the game is build with care, it encourages you to look in places where you would normally never look. Smart collecting-design in games can really open them up and pull the player deeper in. It can also be done wrong, like in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, where you're running from collectible to collectible and it just becomes a chore because of it.
Your museum is awesome because it isn't a reward for doing something. No it is something you can build yourself to display your collections in, which makes collecting as a whole rewarding. You're no longer collecting to get a game-based reward (jumping through a hoop to get a cookie), but you're collecting to proudly display.
The whole effort/reward dynamic is different from what Maxis provided. The museum changes the collecting-gameplay and makes it from a slog into something someone would want to do for fun and the heck of it.
I think you've created something good.
