I love that we have finally magic and spellcasters. I personally love the Art Nouveau style, so the build mode is all a plus for me, and I like what they did in CAS as well.
I would have wanted Alchemy to be a skill, and not tied to being a spellcaster, I have several mortals and even vampires who would love to practice alchemy.
Compared to the vampire pack I feel that spellcasters max too fast. It took a long time to get the vampires to the level where they started to feel powerful. With the spellcasters you can max them before you've really even started to play them properly otherwise, and surely they're not all meant to be virtuosos.
My main complaint though, and the thing that frustrates me to the point that I've recently played anything but spellcaster families is the blasted festival clothing bug in the realm. Every time I visit the Realm, I find myself just scribbling down lists of who needs to be deleted, who needs to be turned back to human, who needs to be deleted and re-added to the save (this time with custom job so they won't be hired as mixologist and then run around the realm in job clothes)... the list goes on. So then I go to manage households, do all that, take a deep breath, load back to the spellcaster family to actually play, go to the realm.... aaand start allover again. So eventually I just gave up on it until they manage to do some sort of patch on that, and started playing non-spellcasters.
Despite all of that, I would absolutely buy the pack again, and love having magic in the game again. I just can't handle the Realm's drunk-clothes very often, and am really hoping they'll give us some means to control what the sims will wear there, or the option to opt out from whatever it is that makes them wear nonsense there.
