Normally a Sim is sick for a few days. Have you tried orange juice to help cure them from sickness if none of the other options don't work? (Unfortunately this won't work for the simple living challenge in Cottage Living).
Other than that I can only suggest trying out clearing out your cache in your downloads folder and making sure that the version you downloaded is up to date.
