You mean it didn't change the catalogue to the bathroom section from the kitchen section? Did you still have a stove selected when you clicked on the bathroom section, as in, did you still have one grabbed and ready to place?

No I didn’t, I just switched to the bathroom category without anything selected

Ok. Do you think it’s some kind of lag in the correct catalogue displaying or does it just stay on the previous catalogue display forever until you click on an object?

No lag, it stays until I click on a object. No I reinstalled the game so no mods or cc

The game installation and the Sims 4 folder that contains your user data such as saves and mods are two completely separate things. You can uninstall and reinstall the game but the Sims 4 folder stays untouched.
Move or rename the Mods folder, trash the localthumbcache.package file then load the game and see if the problem is still there.
