Cannot Adopt an already existing Sim

Product: The Sims 4

Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? It's persistent
What is your current game version number? V1.98.127.1030
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? City Life, University, Ralm of Magic
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? All you need is a child sim and a young adult that is not related to the sim by blood but is engaged to the child's adoptive parent
What happens when the bug occurs? An option that should be there does not show up.
What do you expect to see? An Option to adopt as Caregiver
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? No
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? No

So I have 2 sims who are living together and engaged. One of them adopted an infant who went through the toddler stage and just today went into the child stage eariler than their birthday would indicate (The other Sim is listed as "friend"). When the adopted sim was still in the toddler stage, there was an option to "adopt as caregiver". Now that the sim went into the child stage, that option has disappeared.

  • There's two different interactions:

    1. "Adopt as caregiver" - this does not change the actual family relationships of the Sims. It just makes the adult Sim responsible for the infant/toddler so that they queue check infant/toddler interactions and autonomously care for them. I don't believe it's available past toddler, as you no longer need an adult to take care of basic needs like feeding, bathing, and putting to bed. "Adopt as caregiver" is base game.

    2. "Adopt" - this does change the family relationship of the Sims, but is only available in specific circumstances. First, I believe it's part of Growing Together, not base game. And second, it only works if the child doesn't already have 2 parents in their family tree. It doesn't matter if one or both parents are dead, or even if they've never met them - if the parent slots are filled, you can't add more parents.

Technically there's a third action - "adopt" though phone or computer to adopt a new randomly generated child - but that's not an interaction available between existing Sims.
