1. You have to unzip them. Certain mods (not CC) would require the file to remain zipped, but that would be made clear by the author, and it doesn't apply to archives with package files in them.

4. Most authors will include all the information you need to know. If they don't you can either choose to not download their work or test it out and see. If they don't give any special information then you should just assume there isn't any, though.
