I use CC only maxis match I hate alpha cc I would get so bored just having vanilla tbh half of my cc is recolours because I like to have variety or I like the top part of a dress but not the bottom so I get separated version.
To be honest I merge my custom content now so my game hardly lags at all pretty much as if I had no cc
The only cc I don't merge is like my core game mods
So like mc command centre! << I would never play sims without this mod now.
No happy environment < I was sick of my sims mood changing because of nice decor or happy environment it means my sims personalities can shine through more !

I never used custom content until the sims 4, and now I think I can build a house and decorate it exactly how I like it without any limitations
Yes there can be some bugs but if you know what your doing you can pick up the dodgy cc and what I do is when I download new mods they go in a separate folder so I play. My game if there's no issues next time I start my game up I merge all the cc if there's no issues and it's fine. I only really use tumblr and avoid adfly as much as possible all my downloads get scanned beforehand so it flags if there's any risk or virus. Which is very very rare tbh.
Take for example the beds ... you like the style of bed,shape of bed but there's not a duvet cover that fits your room style, colour scheme with cc you can have all the beds in whatever colour you want.
Wallpapers don't get me started why is there no normal wallpapers but thanks to cc I can now have my sims home looking normal without hideous horrible wallpaper and having to stick to plain walls
I just think playing vanilla is so limiting especially with no colour wheel you need something to add abit more personality homes feel more personal to the sims and you can tailor to fit their personalities I would never go back vanilla !!
And tbh it's only core game mods you need to update if you just using clothes wallpapers etc you don't need to update them
