Game Not Opening - Symbolic Link

I've had my Sims 4 user folder located on a secondary drive (internal). It's been working fine up until the past few days. The EA app has been giving me connection errors and now the error says it's having issues with the game not launching on their end.

All of my mods are up to date, it was again, running fine until recently. I've reinstalled the game once and the EA app multiple times.

The game works fine when removing the link. My question is how to resolve the junction link causing the game not to open, as it has no extra characters in the name.

I have also redone the link twice and the issue persists.

  • aquamarine_blues  If you rename the Sims 4 folder on your secondary drive, does the game work?  The reason I ask is if you delete the symlink and do nothing else, the game isn't reading any of your data.  So the problem could be your data instead of the symlink.

  • I renamed it and the same issue persists, same error from EA app (error trying to launch the game). I re-added the link after deleting it and trying to run the game again, only time I didn't do that was to test if the game would run without any link and just generate a new user folder instead (which it did, played up until live mode and everything was working fine)

I'll try deleting the link and moving back my user folder to Documents to see if the game works/can read my User folder.

After testing without the link the problem does seem to be my User Folder's data. I'm not sure what could be causing this error though.

Update: Removed a mod that was causing the issue, a third party tool displayed the broken cc in question. Ran fine, and the game opens with the junction added again. Thanks for the help!

I deleted my link, and launched the game as normal, letting it generate a new Sims 4 folder in my Documents. Then I copied in my Mods, User settings, etc. into the new folder.

The game still didn't launch until I removed a broken mod causing my issue. (The mod in my case was a broken skin overlay) If you use Mods I'd reccomend "Sims 4 Tray Importer", it's quick and easy for checking broken cc! After I  deleted it, I was able to launch the game as normal with all of my normal files, I Cut + Paste the new folder to my drive and added the symlink, and it launched as normal.

There's an entire megathread for possible fixes for this issue, sadly it can be triggered by things other than broken mods...I found it very useful, so I hope it can help you!

Which broken mod was it or the creator?
