I use the exact same approach as @naeshelle including the spreadsheet (with the same categories), the use of the "broken mods" forum threads, and not updating right away.
I always play off-line anyway, so I can update at my leisure whenever I'm ready. I don't even update every time there is a new patch, sometimes I wait and update two or three patches at once, so I don't have to go through the mods check as often.
@Stormkeep Thanks for the explanation about "core" mods in Sims 3 vs Sims 4. I have been so confused about that.
