Front what you describe, I'm not sure exactly what your issue is so my guess is that you hit the Resume Game button on the main menu to start playing. That's new and it takes you directly to the last household played, bypassing the world screen. If the last thing you did was work on a build where you went to a lot directly from the Map and saved and exited from there or if you saved at the map screen, then the next time you start the game and resume, the game seems to select a random played household. It depends on where you were when you saved and exited the last time you played where the Resume Game button will take you.
The way to not have either happen is to use the Load Game button rather than the Resume button, and pick the save you want to play in. That will load to the Map screen so you can select the world and family you want to play or go back to a lot you were building on just like it was before the Main Menu change.
I am not sure what the mode thing is that you're seeing. I haven't had that happen. But guessing, it may be that you have a scenario in progress that you didn't finish. I haven't played any of the scenarios so I'm not sure how those work. So, it's just a guess.
