[mod-setting relating] Game freezing immediately

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Often (50% - 99%)
What is your current game version number? Can't get in far enough to see
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? City Living
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? It happens as soon as the game opens on the main screen
What happens when the bug occurs? A pop-up for the new Goth kit shows up. Everything is fine at first, but if I click to exit the pop-up, the game freezes and I cannot minimize it at all, and nothing else will open on top of it (eg task manager; google chrome). If I click escape on my keyboard instead of clicking the exit button, nothing happens at all.
What do you expect to see? I expect to be able to close the pop-up and continue on with my game.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Yes
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes
Please describe the patch or change you made. This happened after the Goth kit was released. I had no issue before that.

This happens 4/5 (I usually give up after that) times when I try to open the game, and the only time it doesn't if if I don't get the pop-up ad for the goth kit, and it instead shows me my list of mods and CC. When the error occurs, the only way for me to get out is to force-restart my computer. For the record, I cannot disable CC or mods as I cannot access any menus, since the pop-up needs to close for me to do so. I have tried clicking "repair" in the EA app at least 3 times.

  • I found the issue!  It turned out not to be my CC itself, but the optional pop-up window that lists my CC and mods.  I usually keep it engaged to make sure my CC is active in case I miss that there was an update (#adhd).

What was happening was that the CC pop-up and the ad pop-up were starting at the same time, and the game essentially couldn't figure out what to do.  By the previous suggestion, I did find that the game worked when all CC was removed.

    I solved the issue by:

    • Removing all but 1 item of CC from my Mod folder (Documents> Electronic Arts> The Sims 4 > Mods)
    • Starting the game
    • Exit ad pop-up
    • Uncheck "show at startup" for my CC pop-up
    • Save changes
    • Exit game
    • Move CC back into folder (Documents> Electronic Arts> The Sims 4 > Mods)
    • Start as normal

With only a single item in my Mod folder, I was able to exit the ad pop-up, but still get to the CC pop-up.

I hope this helps if anyone else has a similar issue!

  • @OddAurum Please test without mods/CC: Exit Sims 4 then drag your Mods folder to your desktop. Then delete the file called localthumbcache from Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. Now open Sims 4 and see if you still have the problem. (In your case, you might want to repeat this a few times.) If you don't, you can start the process of figuring out what from your Mods folder was causing it. If you do, we can figure out where to send you for support.

@OddAurum Thanks! I'd suggest using the EA App/Origin to turn auto-updates off. That way you never have a surprise update and always have time to back your stuff up 🙂 Also, if the game has an update that disables mods/CC, there will be a separate pop-up for that.
