A clean game is NO CC/Mods. You need to play a clean game with no previous saves or any other content to see if it is a game installation problem, a machine problem, or some other software related problem. If the problem doesn't occur then it's a CC/Mod problem in which case I can move your post to the Mods forum for better troubleshooting. This is the Mac tech forum so we only look at Mac specific Sims 4 technical problems in a vanilla game.

@Bluebellflora okay ive been playing for about an hour and a half and its been running smoothly and quicker and i havent had a problem yet in my clean game. what should i do next bc there are some saves I really want back? should i just add them back without CC. the one save i was playing though is the only one i experienced trouble with. should I just give up on that one or do we think its most likely broken CC?

Great! Move the problematic save into the newly created saves folder, do not move any other files such as other saves or CC/Mods, just that one save. Play for a bit and see how it is. If it freezes/crashes again, then the issue may be a corrupted save. Unless it always crashes at the same point in which case there may be an in-game trigger for it.
Moving your thread to the Game & Mod issues forum as it's not a Mac issue 🙂
