When the option to add candles is greyed out, it usually means that the cake is not in the right place on the surface (counter, table) it was placed. You have to move it around a little on the surface when that happens until you find the right spot for the option to be active.  But the cake should not disappear, so you probably have something else going on.  

If you are playing on a Mac or PC and are using any mods that concern food like CC recipes, more servings, etc., then I would suspect one of them might be the cause, but it could be other mods too.  To find out, you should try moving your mods folder to your desktop then test the game to see if it still happens.  If it doesn't then you'll have to test your mods to find the one causing your problem.  If it does happen without mods in the game, then try a game repair through Origin or the EA App, whichever one you use.

    Thanks for the reply. I don't have any mods on my game, I just play vanilla with expansions on PC. I tried moving the cake from the table (where the sim always puts it) to the counter and it didn't help.

    @CGrant56 I just tried the Repair system in the EA App and the cake situation still hasn't changed. The Sim put the candle on the table and I tried to add candles but the option was greyed out. I moved the cake to the counter, same thing, moved it to the table in a different place, no change.

    Ok, so no mods and a vanilla game.  Has the cake disappeared again?  And would you post a pic of the cake on the table and another on the counter.  Reason I ask is to see where exactly the cakes are placed.  On counters, there is only one place they will work as a birthday cake.  On a table, the only places they will work as birthday cakes is where the plates go. But cakes can be and will be placed other places when sims set them down.  On both counters and tables, the cake must be centered in the slot and pulled towards the edge until the green thingie that shows when you grab something is even with the edge and the arrow on it is pointed in the direction of the table or counter edge.
