There's no guarantee that any of the backups will go far back enough in time to contain the missing household, but maybe you'll get lucky.
And yes, going forward, it would be better to have separate saves. At the very least, keep backup copies of the main save so that you can revert if something like this happens again.
In general, the game is supposed to protect (i.e. not cull) households that have been played, but ever since Neighborhood Stories arrived on the scene, this has been less than reliable.
