Sims game won't load after Lovestruck (Mac player with CC)

Hi, apologies in advance that this is so long, but it's a bit of a confusing issue, and I am truly blanking on any solution that doesn't include having to get rid of the game.

I haven't been able to play TS4 since the first patch update just a couple days before Lovestruck's release. I own *a lot* of CC from CAS to mods to overrides etc etc. I thought it was just because stuff needed to be updated, so I waited for creators to update their work and thought it'd be fine after that since it usually is. For a while, I could go into CAS at least, but the graphics were still broken and only a couple households would load in when editing households (clicking on others would lead to an infinite loading screen).

Now, the game won't load at all. The game will act like it's about to load (the plumbob will float up and disappear), but then the text gets stuck and the game then says it's "not responding" so I end up force quitting. I did the first thing I could think of which was to just move all of my CC into a different folder and the game loaded perfectly fine. However, once I put anything in it, the game gets stuck again.

Then recently, I saw someone say to move the Mods folder out completely so that the game generates a new folder, I did that and everything was good for a while. I haven't played, but I've been moving my CC folders back one by one. My method was to first look at everything in my individual folders in Sims 4 Mod Manager and delete stuff I didn't want that way, then I would put it back one by one into the newly generated Mods folder, then I'd load the game and test out each individual folder by loading a new game then entering live mode then I'd exit the game (not saving) and do that over and over. However, today I got impatient and after cleaning out stuff through Mod Manager, I added several folders back at once and am back at square one because now nothing will load again. I took out the folders I had added at once and tried loading it with just the folders I knew were good because they had loaded previously and now the game won't load at all.

Before writing this, I took everything out again and the game loaded fine. But now I'm just super confused because I truly have no idea what's wrong with my game. I'm starting to believe that it's not even my CC anymore and something deeper because of what happened just earlier where I tried loading the game with CC that had previously loaded fine and it still getting stuck and not loading. I've also tried other quick fixes such as deleting my localthumbcache and repairing the game with no luck.

I read something somewhere about a factory reset, but I'm not too sure what that entails.

Also, just to provide as much detail as possible, before all of this, my computer storage was running pretty low and I was getting pretty constant reminders that I was almost out of storage. However, because I've gotten rid of so much, I haven't gotten that in a while.

I'm really at a loss for ideas. I'm wondering if there's a save file that's gone bad or maybe something in my tray isn't good, but I can't get that far to find out since the game gets stuck. I have Better Exceptions, but as far as I'm aware, it only scans stuff when you're in the actual game in live mode so I also can't figure it out that way.

Thank you in advance for whoever is able to help me! I love this game, have been playing for years with my favorite sims, and would hate to not ever be able to play again.

Additional info: I have a MacBook Pro.

Thanks again 🙂

  • @nianoona If you're getting Sims 4 start-up slowness with mods/CC but not without, one option is to go into options and turn off showing the list at the start. If it's game (save) loading, that's going to come down to what's in your save (more Sims + more relationships = slower loading) plus what your computer can handle. If it's still slow with no CC even to load a new save, you can see if tech support has any advice for you, but it often comes down just to what your computer can manage.

Hi! I forgot to mention that I have also done the 50/50 method. The issue is that (for example, what I'm doing right now as I type this) is I've narrowed it down to the folder with all of my build mode CC in it. Inside that folder, I organize it base on room type and general CC creators. I've hit a point where I'm getting infinite screens for every CC creator folder I put back in. Just in case I'm not making sense, here's an example of what's happpening: I have a folder of just furniture that the CC creator Harrie has made. When I put that folder back in just now, I got an infinite loading screen even though yesterday, the Harrie folder (when I still had it in my Mods folder) wasn't causing any issues for me.

I put back some of my script mods, so I'm thinking that I might take those out for now and see if that helps any. I updated a few based on the Broken and Updated CC List you provided (thank you for that!), but I haven't looked at everything so maybe it's something there? Not sure, I just have never had an issue with my CC before, like out of all the updates and patches that have happened, my CC has never been a source of this huge of a problem, so I'm going to see if my mods are the issue first. But, there's also a first for everything, so I'll keep looking through CC after that.

    Thanks so far though!

  • @nianoona Could you try this please?

    1. Drag your whole Sims 4 folder from Document > Electronic Arts to your desktop.
    2. Launch Sims 4 and exit.
    3. Newly download a new CC build/buy item and install it in the new mods folder (we're using a new download to rule out file issues in your current one)
    4. Test to see if it works

Let me know how that goes, and also if you're on a PC or a Mac

Just tried it and everything worked fine. I downloaded a door arch that came with a CC collection that released within the last couple days. When I loaded into the game, the mesh was messed up on the arch (the site won't let me submit the photo, but the mesh was purple/pink/green instead of the color it was supposed to be), so I exited it out and got the rest of the collection. Once I downloaded it and loaded back in, the collection was fine so I think it was just a mesh issue within the collection itself. Other than that, the loading screens were normal and everything worked pretty well.

Also, I have a MacBook Pro!

EDIT: No longer having infinite loading screens. The game does load, however it is very finicky. When the plumbob is spinning and goes up, the loading screen takes around 5 minutes (if not more) to load into the game. However, it's finicky because if I move my mouse on the loading screen, I'll get the MacBook rainbow/loading mouse and then the game will get stuck and will say that the Sims "isn't responding" and I have to force quit.

If I don't do that and don't touch the mouse at all, the game will load, but it takes literally forever. So I guess that's my new issue is that the loading screen does technically load, but it takes forever and is very sensitive to not responding if I touch anything while it's loading.

I know it sounds weird. I've literally never had this happen to me so I'm not sure what to make of it.

    Thanks!

Update! My game is officially back to normal again! It still doesn't run amazing 100% of the time and has some lag, but like you mentioned, my computer isn't built for bigger games like TS4 so I'm not too upset about that and am just happy it's working again.

The issue was that I think I just had way too many broken mods to count and because I had so many, I didn't notice some I hadn't updated in like a year. For anyone else that stumbles upon this, the only solution is to just deep clean your mods folder and clean out your CC.

    Thanks again for the help!
