Sims not working

Recently, I have been attempting to play Sims, however, I am experiencing difficulties. When I open the game, there is a black tint over the screen like something is trying to pop up but isn't.  I use the esc key to get this to go away. Then nothing happens when I try to access loading a game or creating a new game. I click on anything and I cannot access anything in the game. When I try to access "game options" I can't even open it, it just appears blank. I will attach a photo below. If anyone has any ideas how to help me, please share!
