Why can't my Sims use their computer?

Everything's been working fine for the majority of my current gameplay (which has been going on for around the past 4 months) but yesterday I came across a problem that would basically make my sim's author career impossible to achieve: The computers stopped working. The action noise can be heard whenever I click on a computer (I've tried multiple types, even laptops) but the actions never appear.

However, my sims are able to use the computers but only autonomously (to chat and to play games).

My game is up to date, I tried restarting it multiple times, I traveled with my sim to a different lot that has computers, and I even evicted my household and put them back into their home (since that always helped with other bugs in the past), but nothing seemed to help in this case so far.

This problem appeared literally out of the blue, I haven't had any problems with the action bubbles before, and I've been playing with Sims 4 for years now.
