why do my sims only have one skill called skill name?

There is no skill called "skill name". If you click on skills in the lower right screen you can see what skills you have learned and what level you are.at.

@TheBigSimmer Do you have mods or CC in your Mods folder? If so, do a "vanilla" test to see if a mod/CC is your problem: Drag the Mods folder to the desktop, delete the file called localthumbcache, open the game to test, and exit without saving.
