I seem to have fixed it kind of? I went onto origin and "repaired" my game, and I am able to play. except I have a glitch now where a big black box appears underneath my sims as if their shadow is glitching. Here are my Mac details anyway:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro14,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled
Memory: 8 GB
When I tried to open Sims 4, the little box popped up saying my game was damaged or was missing data, so I thought I had to download the legacy edition ☹️ because I don't have the same processor and whatnot that EA recommended. I also know nothing about computers so I wasn't sure if my processor was better or worse than the minimum requirement that EA mentioned. I guess its all okay now? I hope. I don't see why it made me 'repair' my game but im happy I don't have to use the legacy edition 🙂 Thanks!

That’s not all the information asked for, please could you look at the link I provided, it is all detailed in there (and will be useful to know for the black shadow issue too).
Great that a repair fixed it! The black boxes are an issue, there’s a thread here with a solution on page 1 - https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-Mac/Shadowy-Box-Glitch-Sims-4/td-p/8417116- 6 years ago
Oops, sorry!

I am attempting to run the standard version of Sims 4, no antivirus, I have tried repairing the game which seems to have worked, I don't have mods 🙂
