it says /Users/*my name*/ Documents/Electronic Arts/ The Sims 4/saves/slot_00000003.save
however in my documents folder there is no electronic arts folder showing up, not even when i do a search for one

Don't do a search. The Electronic Arts folder is hidden from a search, you will never find it if it is in the correct location which, judging by your screenshot, it is. Are you sure it's not there? The file path you're pasting here shows that it is in the correct location.

It may be that your Mac internal storage is now full, or nearly full, and iCloud Drive is pushing all the contents of your Documents folder to the cloud - https://bluebellflora.com/2017/02/06/sims-3-and-sims-4-not-loading-save-games/
